Transfers
Starting from the bottom of the hierarchy of mobility skills pyramid to the top the order is, bed mobility, mat transfers, wheelchair transfers, bed transfers, functional ambulation for ADLS, toilet and tub transfers, car transfers, functional mobility for community mobility, and community mobility and driving. From my observation experiences, this is the order that I expected. I think this hierarchy is in this particular sequence, because it starts out with the very basic skills and increases to more advanced skills as the client works to improve their abilities. This order helps prepare you for the next step as each level becomes more and more complex and requires more skills. In the past, I have had the opportunity to observe mat transfers, wheelchair transfers and toilet/tub transfers. I agree with this approach. I think it is the best order to allow clients to be more functional as they work to become more independent. From what I have learned in this course and in the past, although this order is the most ideal, not every client will follow this exactly. As an OT, we will have to adapt to each individual client and meet their specific needs. Assistive devices and adapted equipment can be used to help support the clients.
